The New Year.
Excitement about big new goals.
Dread about doing it alone.
My learned habit of independence
forced upon me by much-too-busy parents.
Two brothers playing alone in the garden
day after day,
year after year.
still locked in my body as an adult:
stuck in my neck.
“You must be independent.”
Pain from the desire to connect
fighting with the rule of independence.
The neck relinquishes
I feel the need,
Opening to connection with others.
A new freedom for inter- dependence.
