It started with a simple email question – one I’ve heard more times than I can count: “Mark, The Body-Psyche Program changed my life, but how does it work?”
The question came as I was mulling over my next articles for the blog, so I decided that it’s finally time to write a series giving a complete, science-based answer to this perennial question.
Before writing the articles, I did what I thought was going to be a quick check to see what is new in the field of neuroscience research since I last studied the discipline ten years ago – back when I was living in Cambridge, Massachusetts and gobbling up every piece of research I could possibly find that provided scientific insight into personal development processes.
It turns out there have been a bunch of mind-blowing discoveries in recent years that have fundamental implications for how we understand the functioning of our brains, how they get stuck in limiting patterns and how we can make real, lasting changes by involving the whole brain and body. For example:
- We now have a clear picture of exactly what happens in the brain during hypnosis. Plus we know much more about how language is processed in the unconscious brain before we have conscious understanding of words. It turns out that together these discoveries provide a concrete scientific explanation of why and how hypnosis works.
- Studies in neuropsychology and neuroimaging have lifted the veil on the relationship between the conscious mind and the rest of the unconscious brain. For more than 100 years, since Freud’s theory of subconscious, our models of the mind have been based on speculation, with no way to verify what was actually going on in the brain. It turns out those theories were mostly wrong and often detrimental. Now we finally have a model of how the unconscious operates which is based on direct imaging of brain processes. These new theories answer many old mysteries about the nature of consciousness and the relationship between conscious mind and unconscious psychological processes. More importantly they give valuable insights into how the whole brain – conscious and unconscious – can be used for optimum personal development.
- Research in the new field of ‘embodied consciousness’ gives insights into how negative emotions get trapped in the body. This same research explains why and how Body-Psyche guided movement explorations and other body-centered healing modalities can access those trapped emotions and allow them to be released.
When I started my review, I thought I was going to bang out a few articles over the course of a week.
Well, that’s not how it’s going to pan out.
Given how important the new research is, and how fundamentally it informs what it means to be human – how we learn and how we can make changes in our lives – my research and writing process is going to be a much deeper and longer endeavor than I had anticipated.
Presently, I’m wading through scores of hard-core research papers, but at some point I’ll re-emerge with articles laying out how the latest neuroscience research can support you in your own journey of personal development.
I expect the article series will be called “The Neuroscience Of Body-Psyche.”
Once it’s finished you’ll finally have a definitive answers to the question of How does it work? The answers will cover a range of personal development tools including hypnosis, talk therapy and body-centered healing modalities. Of course, this will also include how our Body-Psyche guided meditations and the body-centered hypnosis journeys in The Body-Psyche Program work to affect deep changes.
